Pleural Fluid

The term pleural fluid refers to the fluid found in the space surrounding the lungs, called the pleura. Under normal conditions there is a minimal amount that lubricates the respiratory movement; when it builds up in excess, we speak of pleural effusion.

Possible manifestations: difficulty breathing, a feeling of tightness in the chest, or discomfort when inhaling deeply, depending on the amount accumulated.

Why does it appear? The buildup can be associated with various processes of the lung, the heart, or other causes, so its study seeks to identify the origin.

Which specialist evaluates it? The pulmonologist studies abnormalities of the lung and the pleura, and the thoracic surgeon steps in when a surgical approach is required. If you notice difficulty breathing that does not improve, the advisable thing is to have it assessed by one of these professionals.
