Bronchial or tracheal rupture is an injury to the larger airways, in which the trachea or a bronchus tears, usually from significant chest trauma and, less often, from procedures on the airway.

Possible symptoms: It may present with difficulty breathing, coughing up blood, chest pain, or air trapped under the skin.

When to seek immediate care? This is a situation that requires urgent attention, especially after a hard blow to the chest followed by breathing problems.

Which specialist treats it? Its management falls to the cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon, with support from the pulmonologist. In the case of chest trauma with breathing difficulty, the priority is to seek emergency care without delay.
