Obstructive Bronchitis

Obstructive bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchi accompanied by narrowing of the airways, which makes it harder for air to pass through and usually causes coughing and wheezing when breathing. It is more common in young children and is often associated with respiratory infections.

Common symptoms:

• Persistent cough, sometimes with phlegm
• Wheezing when exhaling
• A sensation of shortness of breath or rapid breathing

Common causes: viral infections, exposure to tobacco smoke or environmental irritants, and, in some cases, a history of allergies.

The pulmonologist is the one who studies respiratory conditions in depth; the internist, the pediatrician, and the general practitioner can perform the first evaluation and refer if necessary. When there is difficulty breathing or a cough that does not let up, it is worth having a professional check it.
